Luck of Heroes
Player characters are the heroes of the story, and as such, they have a greater degree of luck than the allies and creatures they encounter.
Luck provides players with limited control over their fate, allowing them to improve rolls when it matters most—or take risks in hopes of regaining an advantage.
The Three States of Luck
Every player character starts each session with three Good Luck points. Luck exists in three states:
- Good Luck
- Bad Luck
- Burnt Luck
✔ Good Luck and Bad Luck can be spent to modify rolls.
✔ Burnt Luck occurs when Luck is permanently used up for the session.
Spending Luck
Luck can be spent before a roll to modify its difficulty or after a roll to attempt a reroll.
How Good Luck Works
✔ Spending Good Luck before a roll upgrades the check (improves the die size).
✔ After use, Good Luck converts into Bad Luck.
How Bad Luck Works
✔ Spending Bad Luck before a roll downgrades the check (reduces the die size).
✔ After use, Bad Luck converts back into Good Luck.
Burning Luck for a Reroll
✔ Either Good Luck or Bad Luck can be permanently spent for the session to reroll a check.
✔ When spent in this way, the Luck is Burnt and cannot be recovered until the next session.
Luck Summary
Luck Type | Effect | After Effect |
---|---|---|
Good Luck | Upgrade the check (roll a better die size) | Becomes Bad Luck |
Bad Luck | Downgrade the check (roll a worse die size) | Becomes Good Luck |
Burnt Luck | Reroll a check (permanently consumes a Luck point for the session) | Luck is lost for the session |
Final Thoughts
Luck is a powerful tool, but it requires careful management.
- Using Good Luck for an upgrade means you’ll later have Bad Luck to deal with.
- Spending Luck permanently for a reroll can make future rolls more unpredictable.
How you use your Luck can define the outcome of your adventure!
